Responsible alcohol serving at events – this is how staff take responsibility

A temporary serving permit is just the first step. During the event itself, it is the bar staff who determine whether the serving is legal and safe. This guide shows what this responsibility means in practice.

Why are events extra sensitive?

At festivals and events, there are many guests, a fast pace, crowds and often temporary staff. This increases the risk of over-serving, serving to minors and fighting. Therefore, the municipality and the police examine events particularly carefully – and can supervise while the service is in progress.

What does the alcohol law require of staff?

  • Age – alcohol may not be served to persons under the age of 18. Identification will be checked at the slightest doubt.
  • Intoxication – anyone who is noticeably under the influence may not be served.
  • Langning – do not serve a guest who is obviously buying for someone who is underage or intoxicated.
  • Waiter – a registered waiter must be on site throughout the serving time.
  • Times and area – serving may only take place within the permit’s times and demarcated area.

How to refuse service the right way

  1. Be clear and calm – say no without arguing or embarrassing the guest.
  2. Give a factual explanation – ”By law, I am not allowed to serve you again tonight.”
  3. Offer alternatives – water, a non-alcoholic drink or something to eat if available.
  4. Inform colleagues and guards – so that the guest does not get alcohol at the next bar.
  5. Document – note incidents in a log if the event has one.
TIPS FROM THE RESTAURANTS

Signs of noticeable impact include slurred speech, unsteady gait, loud or aggressive behavior, and difficulty handling money or credit cards. Assess the whole picture – not just one sign.

When does the municipality require AAS training?

Requirements vary between municipalities, but training in responsible alcohol serving is common as a condition for:

  • major events and festivals for the public,
  • extended serving hours , for example after 1:00 a.m.,
  • places of service where there have previously been problems with order.

Difference from the knowledge test

The knowledge test tests the applicant’s knowledge of alcohol laws. The AAS training is aimed at staff and involves applying the rules in real-life situations in the bar. Both are needed for safe serving.

Before the event: prepare the staff

  • Review the conditions of the permit – times, area and permitted drinks.
  • Appoint and introduce service managers to the entire team.
  • Agree with the guards on how you will handle drunk guests.
  • Have a written Personnel & Alcohol Policy that everyone has read.
  • Make sure all serving staff have the right training.
