How long does it take to get a temporary serving permit?

The most common reason organizers fail to obtain a temporary catering permit is that they apply too late. The processing time is almost always calculated from the date the application is complete – not from the day you submitted it.

Typical processing times

Permit type Normal handling Recommended advance planning
Close company 2–4 weeks At least 4–6 weeks
General public, smaller events Approximately 4 weeks 6–8 weeks
General public, festival/major event 4–8 weeks or more 10–12 weeks or more
Temporary change to existing permit 1–3 weeks 3–4 weeks

Example: Herrljunga municipality states a normal processing time of four weeks for temporary permits for the general public, and Helsingborg requires that applications for temporary permits for closed groups be submitted no later than one month before the event. Always check with your own municipality. The difference between public and closed groups affects the time the most.

What affects the processing time?

  • If the application is complete – missing attachments will stop the case.
  • The knowledge test – the decision cannot be made until the knowledge test is passed.
  • Referrals – police, rescue services and environmental administration have their own response times.
  • Season – spring and early summer are peak seasons for event applications.
  • The size of the event – larger events require more investigation.
  • Previous permits in the municipality – established applicants often go faster.

Timeline: plan backwards from the event date

This is what a schedule might look like for a festival or major public event:

Time before the event To do
12 weeks Secure agreements for location/land, contact the municipality and the police
10 weeks Submit the complete application and pay the fee.
8 weeks Take the knowledge test, answer any additional questions
6–4 weeks Referral response and decision from the municipality
2 weeks Train staff, book security guards, review terms and conditions

That way it goes faster

  1. Follow a step-by-step guide and submit everything at once.
  2. Call the permit unit before you apply and ask what they usually ask for.
  3. Study for the exam in advance, for example with the course Pass the Knowledge Test .
  4. Respond quickly to all questions and additions from the municipality.
  5. Avoid peak season by applying early in the year for summer events.

Do you already have a serving permit?

In that case, you may not need a new permit at all. For an extended area or longer serving hours on a single occasion, a temporary change is often sufficient , which is normally processed more quickly.

TIPS FROM THE RESTAURANTS

If time is already tight: call the municipality directly and ask if there is any possibility of making it in time. Never submit an incomplete application in the hope that it will go faster – it always does the opposite.

WORRY ABOUT TIME?

We know what documents the municipalities request and ensure that the application is complete immediately, so that the processing time starts from day one.
